What translations will I expect to provide for immigration? Getting an exact answer from immigration about a translation is a bit difficult at times. They are fast to say they want a "certified" translation of your birth certificate, marriage certificate or marriage license, divorce decree, or other legal document. If you ask them who they recommend, they may give you a list. The truth however is that a certified document is nothing but a translation by any disinterested third party (usually a company as opposed to an individual) and that the translation is sworn to be truthful, accurate, and completed by a competent person who is well versed in both the source and destination languages. Other documents that may be requested include College or High School transcripts, death certificates or notices, college diplomas or degrees, educational certificates or certificates of completion and adoption records. IMPORTANT: If immigration for any reason does not find a translation acceptable, they will notify you and in doing so, delay the entire process from three to six months. It is not recommended to go with an individual or company that has little experience in this field. Do not let price govern the decision on who you use. You will pay for quality, but it is well worth it. The average price for translation of such documents or certificates ranges from $55.00 - $125.00. Fees will vary depending on the language and length of the document. One page documents tend to cost from $55 to $95 at the most.
